Brown Brogues: ‘Anyone But You’ – Review

This is definitely still the same Brown Brogues we saw causing trouble in a Wigan labour club in last year’s video for ‘Treet U Beta’, but there’s some big differences from the soundtrack to that chaos. Mark Vernon’s echoing, nigh-on indecipherable vocals remain, but sound far less sinister than on anything the pair have released so far. In fact, ‘Anything But You’ is by far and away the least frantic single Brown Brogues have given us, yet it still captures that rough, overdriven charm that’s brought them acclaim and hype from many.

There’s nothing overly complicated, nothing that’s not needed; its lo-fi as it should be. AA side ‘I Drove for Miles Just to Hear about the Book That You’re Reading’ sticks more closely to the duo’s more set mould of aggression, and provides a reminder of the more raucous sound we’ve heard before. Together the two tracks are a little over five minutes, which is the only downside – it’s just not enough, we need more and we need it soon.

If we see a Brown Brogues LP at some point this year we can only hope that it contains the full spectrum of material the band have given glimpses of so far, from the organised-chaos we’re more used to through to the more melodic, almost melancholic sound of ‘Anyone But You.’ If it does, then they’ll definitely have lived up to the buzz escalating around them. The ‘Anyone But You’ single is out on Italian Beach Babes on the 27th of February and the duo start a six gig tour of the UK on the 24th of February, finishing in an as yet to be confirmed venue in Manchester on the 3rd March.
